Baylor forward Matthew Mayer makes surprising transfer decision

Matthew Mayer, one of the best players remaining in the portal made a surprising transfer decision on Friday. After weeks of speculation that he would play at North Carolina, Mayer will instead head to Illinois.

This is a major coup for the Illini, as Mayer averaged 9.8 points per game for the Bears, and was over a 37 percent three-point shooter in both the 2020 and 2021 seasons. He now joins a revamped Illinois squad in 2022 that added key transfer TJ Shannon from Texas Tech as well as signed fringe five-star guard Skyy Clark, to go along with their returnees.
