North Carolina picks up first commit of Mike Malone era - and are in pursuit of several more portal stars

New North Carolina coach Michael Malone has picked up his first portal commitment as UNC head coach, as former Virginia Tech star Neo Avdalas committed to the Tar Heels on Monday.
A year ago Avdalas was seen as a legitimate first round NBA Draft prospect and decided to try his hand at college basketball rather than stay overseas. He immediately became an early season darling, with a 33-point performance against Providence College that briefly had him shooting up draft boards. He eventually came back down to Earth, but still had a solid freshman season, averaging 12 points and nearly five assists for the Hokies this season.
While Avdalas is the first portal commit for Malone, the Tar Heels are in the mix for several other big name transfers. Utah guard Terrence Brown was expected to be on campus Monday, UNC made the final cut for Notre Dame's Jalen Haralson and the staff also met with Wake Forest's Juke Harris on Sunday.
